Newsbin 6.50 New Features

This page describes the new features in 6.50

Contents

Watch Feature

You can now configure Newsbin to create a Virtual Group that contains a list of posts matching your search criteria. If you have Newsbin configured to update headers automatically, this feature will scan those headers as they download and dynamically create a list of posts matching your search criteria and list them under the "Watch_Topics" heading in the Groups tab. You can also configure Newsbin to automatically download those posts as they are discovered or hold on to them so you can manually select them for download when you are ready.

Server Priorities

The concept of marking a server as a "Fill Server" has been replaced with a priority system. Setting a server to Priority 1 means First Priority and will be used first. You can set multiple servers to be at the same priority. The numbers range from 1 to 10. Servers of a lower priority (higher number) only get used if the higher priority servers (lower numbers) all fail to download a specific part of a post.

RAR5 Archives

The RAR library now supports the new RAR5 standard that is making its way into Usenet posts.

Multiple Search Tabs

You can now open additional Search tabs. Either hit the Search icon (magnifying glass) on the toolbar or go under the View menu and selectd "New Search Tab". You can perform Internet or Local searches from the new tab and still retain and act on the search results in other Search tabs.

Post-unRAR Scripts

If you go under the Options menu and select "Scripts" you can configure Newsbin to run a Windows Command Line Script (Batch File). The script has to be saved in a folder called "scripts" under the Newsbin Data Folder. It will be run after a RAR file is unpacked so you can do your own housekeeping duties on it. The discussion on this feature is detailed here.

SSD Optimizations

Newsbin now caches up to 200 parts of each file into memory so there is no intermediary disk access for most files. This cache can be increased if you don't want partial files to be written to disk at all.

You can configure Newsbin to download parts of a post to one drive and have them assembled to another. Useful if you want to minimize I/O bottlenecks by downloading to a fast internal drive (like an SSD) then save the assembled files on larger external media like a NAS.

Regular Expression Handling Tweak

If you have two unique Regular Expressions with a space between them, it'll AND the results.

SMTP Authentication

Now supports SMTP authentication for email notifications so it now support GMail and other mail services requiring smtp authentication.

Improved RAR Password Support

Newsbin will now work through your list of passwords trying all of them on an encrypted RAR file until it succeeds or runs out of passwords to try. You can manage the passwords under Options/RAR Passwords or you can edit the RarPasswords.txt file in the Newsbin Data Folder directly using a text editor.

Improved SPAM Filtering

Encrypted files and large RAR files found inside a RAR file are now filtered by default.

Also, filtering for the following types of SPAM that frequently shows up in the newsgroups were added:

  • Zip files inside RAR files
  • Posts with invalid email addresses
