Toolbar
The Newsbin Toolbar is used to access options that are very commonly used. It exists in two variants:
- Standard Toolbar
- Compact Toolbar
They offer the same functionality, and which one you prefer is up to you. You can also switch them off completely if you want more screen space as all the functionality is also available via the menus.
Standard Toolbar
The Standard Toolbar built into Newsbin uses icons for each of the buttons and looks like the following:
It is also possible to get Newsbin to use a different set of icons by including a file called TOOLBAR.BMP in the Newsbin program folder. This file must consist of a set of 10 32x32 256 color bitmaps concatenated into one file. If present it will be used in place of the standard toolbar.
Newsbin members have contributed a lot of alternative toolbars. Note if you are going to use one of these then make sure that it is for this release of Newsbin and has the correct number of icons in the correct order.
A good example of an alternative toolbars is the following one obtained from here:
or perhaps this one from IdBirch available from here.
There are also a lot of more idiosynctractic alternative toolbars available from here.
Compact Toolbar
The Compact Toolbar uses simple buttons containing text rather than the graphical icons of the Standard Toolbar. This makes is slighly less tall in terms of the screen space it occupies. It looks like the following:
Toolbar Buttons
The following buttons are available on the toolbars
Open
Not available when using the Compact Toolbar
Prompts to open a NZB file which ends with a .nzb extension. This file contains details of a post that is to be downloaded by Newsbin. The format of NZB files is standard XML, and many postings to newsgroups also include them as part of the post.
In early Newsbin 5.0x releases this button also allowed configuration files (.nbi) to be opened. This usage is deprecated and has not been available since Newsbin 5.10 or later.
Save
Saves your current configuration and download list (if currently downloading), Scratch list, and Filters. The configuration is stored in the currently selected configuration file. The filename is listed in the upper left corner of the NewsBin window and ends with a .nbi extension. By default the filename is untitled.nbi but it is suggested that you create your own filename using the "Save Configuration As..." option.
Update
Downloads headers for all enabled newsgroups. Operates the same as the Download Latest command.
Pause
Pauses all queued download activity. Any tasks currently downloading complete but no new tasks will continue. For example, a single part of a multipart post will complete but no other parts will download. Also, a header download will complete but, queued header downloads that haven't started yet will not start as long as Pause is selected.
Bandwidth Limiter
Applies the bandwidth limiter set under Options/Network/Bandwidth Limiter Properties. This is a toggle button, click once and the bandwidth limiter is enabled and the button stays depressed. Click again and you are back to full bandwidth and the button is not depressed.
Search
Displays the Search Tab Allows you to search stored headers for matching keywords. Results are loaded into a Post List.
